Binondo Heritage Restoration Project

Since the groundbreaking in April, 2019 to mark the start of construction, scaffolds have been erected and the lower floors have been gutted to return the 95-year old China Bank Building in Binondo to its former grandeur. The branch and the occupants of the mezzanine floor, Administrative and Accounting divisions, were temporarily transferred to the annex building.

“So far, we’re on schedule. Site clearing and demolition are ongoing and we have started the retrofitting and structural works for the ground and second floor,” said SAVP Baldwin Aguilar, project manager.

Demolition works and scaffolding installation are expected to be completed by July, and retrofitting and structural works by December this year.

“It’s business as usual here and we thank our customers for bearing with us despite the dust and noise caused by the construction work,” said VP and Metro Manila West Region Head Shirley Tan, noting that customers appreciate what the Bank is doing as the restoration will contribute to the renewal of the world’s oldest Chinatown, Binondo.

The centerpiece of China Bank’s centennial celebration next year, the Binondo Heritage Restoration Project aims to preserve the Bank’s original headquarters and its place in the history of the Chinese Filipino community for future generations.  Though it remains structurally safe, the Binondo building has lost its historic character due to the renovations done over the years and general weathering and aging.  Extensive structural, architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and insulation works will be undertaken to restore and preserve the historic building and meet modern building requirements and codes.

China Bank engaged Architect Manuel Noche and his firm Noche + Architects for the restoration of the building. Architect Noche is the secretary of the Heritage Conservation Society with advocacy for the restoration and renewal of the Binondo area.
